No Covenant, No Commitment
Posted by Michaelsei (that's me!) on Helium.com
In everything that you do, you are investing in your future. If you live like hell today, you should expect to receive hell tomorrow ('you reap what you sow'). This principle speaks succinctly to the issue of premarital sex. There are no rewards for having sex before marriage: instant and immediate gratification of lust will only bring the judgment of God. In the long run, there can only be negative results. If you engage in this immoral behavior, you will have sinned against God, you will have sinned against your own body, and you will have sinned against the one with whom you had sexual intercourse.
In the seventh of the Ten Commandments, God has commanded all of mankind to be morally pure: "Thou shalt not commit adultery." Although it seems like a stretch to apply this command to premarital sex, it must be understood that this commandment is really a summary of all the commands like those found in Leviticus 18, which are considered a definition of the seventh commandment. The Westminster Shorter Catechism states: "Question 71: What is required in the seventh commandment? Answer: The seventh commandment requires the preservation of our own and our neighbor's chastity, in heart, speech, and behavior." Furthermore, Jesus Christ stated: "Ye have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery.' But I say to you that every one who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart." Matthew 5:27-28 (RSV). What an indictment! No man will ever be found guiltless of committing this sin. I think that if Jesus Christ condemned guys "checking out" girls, then He severely condemns premarital sex.
You also sin against your own body and the one you are involved sexually with when you engage in sexual intercourse outside of the marriage covenant. You take the risk of contracting an STD and/or getting pregnant. Abstinence until marriage is the only 'safe sex' and 'no fail' contraceptive.
Our bodies were made for God's glory not our own pleasure. On the other hand, God extends to us these pleasures inside of the marriage covenant. "Marriage is honorable in all, and the bed undefiled..." Heb 13:4 (KJV). We rob ourselves and pillage our future delight with the wife or husband of our youth. We trade our birthright for a pot of porridge, so to speak. We have the opportunity to give our future spouse a beautiful gift on our wedding night, 'you are the first, I have remained true to you even before we met.'
Everyday the number of single parents increases. Consequently, there is a major problem with thinking that premarital sex is okay. For those who value long-term commitment, it is clear to see that if there is no marriage covenant; there is no assurance of true commitment.

Biblical Paradoxes
If the Bible teaches that God has predestined the elect and yet calls all men to repentance, then we must hold both as scriptural not rejecting the one we don't like. One day we will fully understand how they are consistent with each other.
If the Bible teaches that God hath declared the end from the beginning and that He is not the author of sin, then we must hold both as scriptural not rejecting the one we don't like. One day we will fully understand how they are consistent with each other.
If the Bible teaches that God changes His mind and says that He changeth not, then we must hold both as scriptural not rejecting the one we don't like. One day we will fully understand how they are consistent with each other.

The Will of God
Posted on OAO Message Board, Topic: The future as both CERTAIN and CONTINGENT
I believe that God created the world, because that's what the Bible says. I believe that God has an elect and that He will lose none of them, because that's what the Bible teaches. But I think that we are missing something, all of us. How do we determine these ideas to be philosophically equivalent? But that is what God is calling us to. The Bible is true, it is God's word. We are required to understand His Word comparing scripture with scripture. I don't really have a great answer for the scripture you quoted (scriptures which seem to imply that man is a free moral agent), I can give you the textbook response:God's eternal decreetal [perfect] will is what must happen because God has determined that it will be so. And yet nothing happens but by the will of God, thus it is by His permissive will that He foreordains that sin will enter the world and His plan of redemption executed (no pun intended).
God doesn't want some poor soul to be raped, murdered, mutilated, castrated or incarcerated/tortured. Except for the restraining work of the Holy Spirit, we would see quite a bit more evil in this world. It is not that he chose this person to be decimated, but that He chose you or me not to be...THIS is the grace of God...God hates sinners, while I was a sinner Christ died for me, Christ died for someone He hated. Love is a decision that God made according to His own pleasure.

Ron Paul Statement of Faith
Statement of Faith
By Rep. Ron Paul, MD.
The Covenant News ~ July 21, 2007
I have never been one who is comfortable talking about my faith in the political arena. In fact, the pandering that typically occurs in the election season I find to be distasteful. But for those who have asked, I freely confess that Jesus Christ is my personal Savior, and that I seek His guidance in all that I do. I know, as you do, that our freedoms come not from man, but from God. My record of public service reflects my reverence for the Natural Rights with which we have been endowed by a loving Creator.
I have worked tirelessly to defend and restore those rights for all Americans, born and unborn alike. The right of an innocent, unborn child to life is at the heart of the American ideal of liberty. My professional and legislative record demonstrates my strong commitment to this pro-life principle.
In 40 years of medical practice, I never once considered performing an abortion, nor did I ever find abortion necessary to save the life of a pregnant woman. In Congress, I have authored legislation that seeks to define life as beginning at conception, H.R. 1094. I am also the prime sponsor of H.R. 300, which would negate the effect of Roe v Wade by removing the ability of federal courts to interfere with state legislation to protect life. This is a practical, direct approach to ending federal court tyranny which threatens our constitutional republic and has caused the deaths of 45 million of the unborn. I have also authored H.R. 1095, which prevents federal funds to be used for so-called “population control.” Many talk about being pro-life. I have taken and will continue to advocate direct action to restore protection for the unborn.
I have also acted to protect the lives of Americans by my adherence to the doctrine of “just war.” This doctrine, as articulated by Augustine, suggested that war must only be waged as a last resort--- for a discernible moral and public good, with the right intentions, vetted through established legal authorities (a constitutionally required declaration of the Congress), and with a likely probability of success.
It has been and remains my firm belief that the current United Nations-mandated, no-win police action in Iraq fails to meet the high moral threshold required to wage just war. That is why I have offered moral and practical opposition to the invasion, occupation and social engineering police exercise now underway in Iraq. It is my belief, borne out by five years of abject failure and tens of thousands of lost lives, that the Iraq operation has been a dangerous diversion from the rightful and appropriate focus of our efforts to bring to justice to the jihadists that have attacked us and seek still to undermine our nation, our values, and our way of life.
I opposed giving the president power to wage unlimited and unchecked aggression, However, I did vote to support the use of force in Afghanistan. I also authored H.R. 3076, the September 11 Marque and Reprisal Act of 2001. A letter of marque and reprisal is a constitutional tool specifically designed to give the president the authority to respond with appropriate force to those non-state actors who wage aggression against the United States while limiting his authority to only those responsible for the atrocities of that day. Such a limited authorization is consistent with the doctrine of just war and the practical aim of keeping Americans safe while minimizing the costs in blood and treasure of waging such an operation.
On September 17, 2001, I stated on the house floor that “…striking out at six or eight or even ten different countries could well expand this war of which we wanted no part. Without defining the enemy there is no way to know our precise goal or to know when the war is over. Inadvertently more casual acceptance of civilian deaths as part of this war I'm certain will prolong the agony and increase the chances of even more American casualties. We must guard against this if at all possible.” I’m sorry to say that history has proven this to be true.
I am running for president to restore the rule of law and to stand up for our divinely inspired Constitution. I have never voted for legislation that is not specifically authorized by the Constitution. As president, I will never sign a piece of legislation, nor use the power of the executive, in a manner inconsistent with the limitations that the founders envisioned.
Many have given up on America as an exemplar for the world, as a model of freedom, self-government, and self-control. I have not. There is hope for America. I ask you to join me, and to be a part of it.
Sincerely,
Ron Paul

God's Foreknowledge and Predestination
Posted by Me on an OAO Message Board:
joem said:...exhaustive foreknowledge...equals exhaustive predestination...
jesse said:...If God eternally foreknew all that will unavoidably occur, God could never decide what will occur...
I think these statements are mutually exclusive. And as such, one or both statements must be wrong. And if wrong, then the philosophical underpinnings of these statements must also be wrong. So which one is wrong?
I agree with foryou that in God's perfection He could foreknow all events in time including His active role in it and not need to change anything. God is powerless to originate a current idea/action in the same way that He is powerless to sin, IE change from being perfect.
Malachi 3:6 For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.
In addition, God is the creator...Including being the creator of time. If you say He sovereign; He is not limited by time. There can be no "moment" for Him in eternity. To discuss sequence or moments, presupposes that He is limited by time. Is God in time or eternity? Time begins and ends. God has given us this picture in creation/natural revelation. God has no beginning and no end. If you can comprehend this, you can comprehend the incomprehensible.
I being a creature in time and space cannot fathom anything that is beyond time or space. This is why God has to reveal Himself for someone to know Him. That is why He uses Parables, analogies (heck, all knowledge is analogical), poetry, allegories, prophetic imagery and such the like. He cannot say I am like "X". Because there is only one "x" like Him and that is the "X," IE Himself; thus all knowledge of God is derivative and is in universal terms: the three "universal" omni's or universal negative (versus affirmative) definitions: eternal (without time) and pure/holy (without blemish). For we know not what "eternal" or "pure" really mean since we experience neither eternity nor consummate holiness.
I agree with foryou that we must always return to scripture. We cannot start with the scripture and finish with philosophy. We must start with scripture, and be always checking our philosophy each step of the way by scriptural principles; concluding with something that does not contradict scripture or else we have erred in our surmising.

Is Hell a real place or a metaphor to deter evil-doers?
Posted by Michaelsei (that's me!) on Helium.com
God is sovereign. God is Holy, Pure, and Just. God hates sin and evildoers. God created man in His image.
Man erred from conforming to God's attributes. Thus, sin was brought into the world. From Adam, the sin nature passed from father to son, on and on. All have sinned. God cannot stand sin to be in His presence.
Hell is real, but hell is not a place. It is being without a place. It is being away from the presence of God. Hell may be depicted as a place of fiery torment, but it is usually depicted as a place of outer darkness. A cold, dank morgue where solitude and fear reign over you. You scream and cry out for death to take you, but death has already taken your mortal body. You are experiencing what is called the second death. Your immortal soul is separated from your creator. You have been cut off from your source of life, but again not in the corporeal sense. This death is not a perishing away but an eternal perishing that ceases not. This is hell.
It ought to deter evildoers. The commandments given to the nation of Israel served to conform them to God's image. In so doing, evil was not allowed to persist. Capital crimes required capital punishments. Lesser crimes required retribution. If I was starving, I may steal to replenish my strength, but I would be required to pay back many times more than I stole. If I took a life in premeditated murder, my blood would be required; however, if I committed manslaughter in the heat of a struggle unpremeditated, then I would have refuge according to the Law. Capital crimes are deterred by capital punishments, this is God's design. On the contrary, not every individual is unilaterally deterred from doing what they will. They will serve as examples and will be punished.
On deterrence, another example is Genghis Khan. Genghis Khan was an authoritarian ruler who went far beyond God's perfect justice to his own form of deterrence. I use him only as an example of how punishments are deterrents. He used capital punishment even in cases of lesser crimes. He achieved a peace that would still be seen in his grandson's lifetime. When Kublai Khan was in power, Marco Polo passed through the region, living the adventure story that he would later bring home.
Ultimately, God determines the number of the elect. However, in a society where God's justice is utilized, the restraint of the Holy Spirit will be seen at work in that nation against evildoers. Hell can be lauded as the final punishment for evildoers, and for some, I hope and pray that it is a deterrent from evil. The only thing that he would lack is to seek after Jesus Christ and His salvation.

No kidding. He should be able to predict it. He has been in charge of our economy for years. He knows what he has done and he knows where we are headed. (Read his statement.)
With the 'New' Fed's policy of lowering inflation we ought to see the market correcting itself...But what that means is Recession at best, Depression at worst.

Bad science, Bad journalism. Since when does the truth not matter?
Statistics rule the day:
"the filmmakers commissioned a statistician, Andrey Feuerverger, a professor at the University of Toronto, who calculated that the odds that all six names would appear together in one tomb are one in 600, calculated conservatively — or as much as one in one million."
Science is the foundation (so says secular humanism):
"We’re not scientists. At the end of the day we can’t wait till every ossuary is tested for DNA,” he said. “We took the story that far. At some point you have to say, ‘I’ve done my job as a journalist.'"
So this is journalism; 'finding' a story regardless of its validity?:
"the filmmakers did not conduct DNA testing on the other ossuaries to determine whether the one inscribed “Judah, son of Jesus” was genetically related to either the Jesus or Mary Magdalene boxes; or whether the Jesus remains were actually the offspring of Mary."
Source NY Times Article "Crypt Held Body of Jesus and Family, Film Says" By Laurie Goodstein Feb 27, 2007.
All the evidence is before you. Do you read the historical 'fiction' book "The Da Vinci Code" and believe it because it sounds convincing when the author himself claims that his intention is not to persuade or inform but to entertain (although I think he is lying). And do you watch this 'documentary' which is being pervaded from a 'scientific' standpoint when the filmmakers are clear that they are storytellers and not scientists; and when the truth is sitting right before their eyes to 'discover'?
I want to see DNA testing done on the other ossuaries before I'd give an ounce of credibility to a single thing that they have to report. And who will decry these filmmakers' blatant disregard of reason and logic? I for one will. So then they do perform the DNA testing and it proves that this is the tomb where Jesus Christ's family was buried (we shall see, then again probably not). This is not proof the Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene. The other question I have is why do they presume that the Judah buried there is not Jesus' brother Judah? They may have a legitimate answer but I am still wondering about that one all the same (I hope there is no more use of statistical analysis in the project).

Latest Constitution Party Email
| ||
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 5, 2007 Thought Police Strike Again Newest 'Hate Crime' Bill Violates Constitution: Attempts End-Run Around Free Speech Lancaster, PA: The Constitution Party, the country's third largest political party in terms of voter registration, warns Americans that the latest federal 'hate-crime' bill introduced in the House of Representatives is a dangerous threat to Constitutionally protected rights. H.R. 254, introduced by Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee, D-Texas, is another version of proposed legislation passed by the House in 2005 and the Senate in 2004. Only strong public outcry and a Republican controlled Congress kept this type of legislation from becoming law. Now that Democrats are in charge there's a tough fight ahead to keep this dangerous bill from passing. H.R. 254 would make certain types of speech a federal offense. So-called 'hate crimes' legislation is dangerous for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the blatant unconstitutionality of such laws. 'Hate crime' laws would allow federal "thought police" to interfere in the law enforcement authority of states and localities - something our founders were clear was NOT to be allowed. H.R. 254 would require every state to pass and enforce 'anti-hate' laws. It would outlaw stating a "bias" against certain 'federally protected' groups such as homosexuals. Constitution Party National Chairman Jim Clymer warned "So-called 'hate crime' laws could mean the Bible would be considered 'hate literature' and preaching from it would be 'hate speech' because of references to religious teachings on homosexuality or other behaviors. The Orwellian implications of these types of laws mean Bible-believing Christians could become criminals simply because they spoke out about their beliefs." Citing a 2004 case in Philadelphia, where 11 Christians were charged under a 'hate-crimes' statute for peacefully protesting at a gay rights rally, Mr. Clymer, a practicing attorney, said "Law-abiding Americans became criminals because they exercised a right our forebears fought and died for". "By introducing the Anti-Defamation League's (ADL) federal 'hate crime' bill into Congress for the second time, Rep. Jackson-Lee shows she's bound and determined to stifle your First Amendment Rights no matter how many times she has to make a run at it", noted Constitution Party Communication Director Mary Starrett who added: "The Constitution Party condemns H.R. 254 as an affront to our liberty. Today, ADL-inspired 'thought crime' laws are stripping nations of free speech. "In Canada and many European countries, it is a crime to use the internet to criticize 'federally protected' groups, such as homosexuals and Muslims. In England, two men who called Islam 'wicked' were indicted under Britain's 'hate crime' law and now face seven years in prison. Those horrors do not belong in America!" Referring to the group behind this bill, Clymer noted: "Congresswoman Jackson-Lee's H.R. 254 is being pushed by the same group, ADL, responsible for the British law that says truth cannot be used as a defense in court. only the complaints by members of specially protected groups who say their feelings have been hurt are being allowed. The reality of what these types of laws are doing and have done to people across the world should be a chilling reminder to Americans to oppose these laws while we still can" warned Clymer. -30- To interview Constitution Party National Chairman Jim Clymer on 'hate crime' legislation and other issues of vital importance to Americans, contact: Mary Starrett, Communications Director (602) 315-6195 mstarrett@constitutionparty.com |

Intelligent Children?
Interestingly enough this book has caused a stir regarding the level of intelligence that children really have. I must say for my part I agree with the author's assessment. I think children are smarter than most adults give them credit for. In fact, I merely think of children as little people; for that is who they really are. A lot of people act/talk differently around children "condescending to their level." I, on the other hand, talk differently when I am around adults-adults wear masks-and plainly when I speak to children. I have to craft my words when I talk to adults when I am around children all I have to do is be myself.
I know that I am "grown up," but I don't "feel" grown up. I think/feel the same as when I was a child-child defined as younger than 18yrs old. Adults make such sharp distinctions on what it is to be adult. Drinking coffee, dissociating with children, getting into debt; these are some of the telltale signs of adulthood...I practice none of these (I know these are not the same for everyone but these are my example of why I do not "feel" adult).
And...I am an adult. I can start a sentence with "and" if I want to. "Being an adult is having the ability to make the choice." Well, I had the cognitive ability to make that choice when I was 5-and many other choices growing up.
I'll admit that I have matured, but my theories have not drastically changed. I am still the same creature philosophically and theologically-meaning I see the world through the same eyes as when I was a "child."
More admissions: God has put parents in authority over their children so what they say is right bottom line. Not necessarily right before God, but right for the child to obey w/o a divisive and questioning attitude. There is supposedly a recourse for children to call into question whether the parent's ruling is in accordance with God's law but usually parents make it very difficult to appeal.
My antipathy regarding this entire affair under consideration is the unjust, unfair, and unequal treatment of children. Jesus said "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them" (Matthew 19:14).
I believe that they must learn their place in humanity: as under authority and never autonomous.
I believe that they must learn their place in humanity: persons yet maturing.

Constitution Party
Whether you are a "Constitutionalist," a conspiracy theorist, or you enjoy reading dystopian/utopian sci fi stories on what the future could look like, you must admit that more Government bureaucracy is not good. More involvement in the affairs of the common citizen is bad. If you don't think so think "IRS."
America needs God. This is the work of the church, pastors, church planters, committees, missionaries and evangelists.
America needs its Constitution. This is the work of citizens, Constitutional lawyers, statesmen, and the Constitution Party.
America's Largest "Third Party"
"The Constitution Party (www.constitutionparty.com), the third largest party in the United States measured by voter registrations, is growing fast and is made up of Americans who believe a return to constitutional government is imperative." (Quoted from CP Email Update)

Something Decent to "Fwd:"
The “ICE” Campaign
Recently, the concept of "ICE" is catching on quickly. It is simple and
important method of contact during emergency situations.
As cell phones are carried by majority of the population, all you need to do is store the number of a contact person or person who should be contacted during an emergency as "ICE" (meaning In Case of Emergency).
The idea was thought up by a paramedic who found that when he went to the scenes of accidents, there were always mobile phones with patients, but he didn't know which number to call. He therefore thought that it would be a good idea if there was a nationally recognized name for this purpose.
Following a disaster in
Please forward this. It won't take too many "forwards" before every body will know about this. It really could save your life, or put a loved one's mind at rest.
For more than one contact name simply enter ICE1, ICE2 and ICE3 etc.
A great idea that will make a difference! Let's spread the concept of ICE by storing an ICE number in our mobile phones today! Please forward to your all nearest and dearest.
(A decent forwarded email for once; deserves to be read by all.)

Dystopian Future?
Freedom is Slavery
Ignorance is Strength
Big Brother is Watching You
Who controls the past controls the future:
who controls the present controls the past.
Until they become conscious they will never rebel,
and until after they have rebelled they cannot become conscious.
without increasing the real wealth of the world.
Goods must be produced,
but they need not be distributed.
And in practice the only way
of achieving this was by continuous warfare.
The command of the old despotisms was 'Thou shalt not.'
The command of the totalitarians was 'Thou shalt.'
Our command is 'Thou art.'
There are three stages in your reintegration...
There is learning, there is understanding, and there is acceptance.
Newspeak:
Ingsoc
Doublethink
Crimestop
Goodthink
Doubleplusgood Duckspeaker
Oldspeak:
Ingsoc=English Socialism
Doublethink=To think contradictorily in such a way as to accept anything.
Crimestop=To stop a logical train of thought before it becomes a thought crime.
Goodthink=Thoughts that agree with whatever the powers that be deem is "right."
Doubleplusgood Duckspeaker=Read the book and figure it out for yourself.

Love and Marriage
God created woman for man, saying "It is not good that the man should be alone" (Gen 2:18). In fact a man's true wealth can be seen in his family, for his "wife shall be as a fruitful vine...and [his] children like olive plants" (Psalm 128:3). Additionally, a man that has a family is fulfilling the commission of God to "be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion...over every living thing that moves on the earth" (Gen 1:28).
Some say that the Bible teaches that it is better that man should be alone for these days are evil, for Paul the Apostle said "I wish all were as I myself am" that is single. But it is clear when it says that "some will depart from the faith...who forbid marriage" (I Timothy 4:1-3). "But if you do marry, you have not sinned" (I Cor 7:28). And that if you, well, have a sex drive then "each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband" (I Cor 7:2). The fact is most people have a sex drive that God put there. Without it, the human race would perish on the earth. The reason Paul made such a statement was that in singleness he could devote himself entirely to ministry. But the truth is that God has not called all to be an apostle/missionary church planter. "For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ" (I Cor 12:12). Thus, celibacy is not for everyone. In fact, it is not for the majority to be celibate. In response to the statement "It is better not to marry" (Mt 19:10), Jesus said, "Not everyone can receive this saying, but only those to whom it is given" (Mt 19:11). So the Scripture is clear only some are given by God to be Spiritual Eunuchs for the sake of the Kingdom.

What others think
Altogether 36,322 have taken that quiz so far and like a poll it can tell us something about people.
- 37% of the quizzed were labeled interpersonal intelligence (mob/masses)
- 15% were intra personal (loners/thinkers)
- 14% musical intelligence (left brainers/artsy types)
- 11% bodily kinesthetic (hands-on type/brutes)
- 8% spatial intelligence (?/!)
- 8% linguistic intelligence (writers/speakers)
- 4% logical-mathematical (nerds/nerds)
(I inserted the parenthetical comments from what I think these types of intelligence are referring to.)
It would seem from everyday experience that most people really are a part of the crowd. They do not think entirely for themselves. Much of what they believe or 'know' has been told to them by another person who heard it from someone else. They are a part of "the masses". The masses will not stop being the masses either. No amount of education or information will change the way they relate to others and the world around them. Influence gets the masses to move though. Hollywood movies, pop icons, targeted advertising, 'news' media and Federal government (which includes government schools) are the prime movers.
Think about it, no really; don't just accept it because I said it, think about it.

Intelligence
A further development on my previous post is the idea of different types of intelligence. I have seen master memorizers first hand, and they are incredible. I am an analytical intellect. I have some memorizing ability but my strength lies in my ability to put things together and figure out how they work.
Now, I do not take these internet quizzes very often but this one proved interesting enough and validated my thoughts concerning myself ( not that I needed the quiz to prove anything to me). Here it is...
Intra personal Intelligence
Some people thing you're a loner, but you just like spending time in your own head with your own thoughts. You're attracted to the works of great philosophers. You've got an intense understanding of yourself, and wish other people were as self-aware as you are. The company of others can be a distraction and an irritant sometimes. You learn best when left alone to figure out the problem for yourself. You'd be best suited to a career as an academic, theologian, philosopher, psychiatrist, or writer.
I refer to myself as an analytical intellect, how about you?

Mind Matters
I enjoyed this article so I thought I would share it with any who might read this blog. I have supposed for some time now that we (people in general) give ourselves too little credit for the level of our intelligence. "For I am fearfully and wonderfully made" (Psalm 139:14).
I have been in the Navy now for about two years. I have successfully completed my training in one of the military's toughest schools, academically. I have observed the intellectual growth of several different types of individuals in a harsh academic environment. I have seen young men and women of average intellect radically change their views of themselves after passing through this program. Before they joined the Navy, most of these individuals would never have considered that they could accomplish this much (what they can now look back on as history). No intellectual field is closed to a majority of these individuals. I, for one, stymied myself from the elite pursuits thinking I could never hack it. But now I realize that I could have...Or is it that after I have completed a year and a half of mental training that I am now ready for any academic pursuit known to man. All that I truly lack is motivation. And for those who have motivation; you can accomplish nearly all that you put your mind to.
I believe that we have larger mental capacities than we think. I think we have more intellectual ability than we will admit. Why would anyone want to be dummed down? With greater knowledge comes greater responsibility. In addition, we don't want to give up cable television. Because if we gave up television and games and such, we would spend our time in intellectual pursuits: classical education, self government (morally and politically), and Christian Theism. For some the intellect is harder to exercise than the body, for others vice versa. We should not neglect the conditioning of either. Although society places such a great emphasis upon our bodies we should place greater emphasis on our minds especially for those of us whose minds are renewed.
"...for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come." I Timothy 4:8

A mind is a terrible thing to waste
GARY NORTH'S TIP OF THE WEEK
Gary North's Tip of the Week - January 13, 2007 Brain Training
===============================================================
After I turned 45, my memory skills began to fade. I
could not recall things as fast as before. This is common
at age 45. Fortunately, the Web has helped me compensate
in my writing. Wiki is a wonder.
A recent study reveals that there is a tremendous
payoff for simple mental exercising. "The Washington Post"
(Dec. 20, 2006) reports on mental exercise vs. physical.
If anything, the study suggests, there is a
bigger payoff to mental exercise, because the
brief training sessions seemed to confer enormous
benefits as many as five years later. That would
be as if someone went to the gym Monday through
Friday for the first two weeks of the new year,
did no exercise for five years, and still saw
significant physical benefits in 2012. . . .
Each of the groups being trained had 10 sessions,
each lasting an hour to 75 minutes, and each
session presented progressively more challenging
problems. Compared with the control group, those
who got memory training did 75 percent better on
memory tasks five years later, those who got the
reasoning training did 40 percent better on
reasoning tasks, and those who got the speed
training did 300 percent better than the control
group.
The study group was for people age 65 and older. Some
were in their nineties.
There was a warning that applies to me.
To reap the benefits, [Sherri] Willis said,
people need to get outside their comfort zones.
For someone who likes to solve crossword puzzles,
it is important to make sure the puzzles get
harder with time -- or to start playing chess.
Someone who hates to play games, she said, should
find something else that stretches the mind.
http://snipurl.com/braintrain
I hate games. I hate puzzles. I also hate learning a
new piece of software. But I'll do the latter if there is
a big enough benefit. I hope that's enough.
My tip: Learn a new program this year. It can be
freeware. Master it. Put it to use.
Then do it again next year.
